The next A Better Start cross-site learning and development event will be held on 29th and 30th September 2016 in Nottingham.
'Focus on Social and Emotional Development' will be co-hosted by the Small Steps, Big Changes team and the welcome address will be made by Councillor David Mellen, portfolio holder for children's services at Nottingham City Council. Social and emotional development is one of the three key developmental outcome areas for the A Better Start programme,
Other speakers include Professor Pasco Fearon, professor of developmental psychopathology at University College London (UCL); Professor Alan Stein, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Oxford; Dr Elsa Montgomery, head of the department of midwifery at King's College London; Dr Hilary Kennedy, educational psychologist and video interaction guidance (AVIGuk) practitioner; Sally Hogg, strategic lead for Mums and Babies in Mind with the Mental Health Foundation and the Maternal Mental Health Alliance; Amanda Jones, consultant perinatal psychotherapist and professional lead of North East London NHS Foundation Trust's Perinatal Parent Infant Mental Health Service; Chris Cuthbert, director of development for A Better Start; and Phyllis Brackenbury, programme director for Small Steps, Big Changes. There will also be group discussions and networking opportunities held during the course of the event.
The event coincides with #HVweek, a showcase and celebration of the work Health Visitors do with children and families. Karen Stansfield from the Institute of Health Visiting will be presenting at the event, on the subject of 'Transforming practice in universal services'.

A Better Start is a £215 million investment by the Big Lottery Fund, launched in October 2012 to improve the life chances of some of the most vulnerable babies and children in England. Nottingham is one of the five areas that were competitively selected to deliver programmes of events to improve understanding about effective early childhood intervention. The other sites that make up the programme are: Blackpool, Bradford, Lambeth and Southend.
The last Learning and Development event held for A Better Start partners focused on Language and Communication and was co hosted in June 2016 by Better Start Bradford.
